Tallit (Prayer Shawl)

The tallit or tallis is one of the few ornaments we use in the synagogue. There are countless varieties to choose from and it’s hard for us to recommend a specific type. The most traditional material is 100 percent wool. The Ashkenazi custom is to include black or blue stripes, and the Sefardi custom is white stripes. Some people enjoy multi-colored talilitim. When considering size, it should hang to just past the hips when worn over the head and shoulders.

There are two main times when the tallit is worn: during morning prayers and while reading from the Torah scroll. Since the Torah is the original Jewish book, it seemed appropriate to include the tallit on this site.

Where does the custom come from? This wikipedia article “covers” the topic.
